When introduced to Europe from Byzantium in the 11th century, many viewed forks as an unnecessary and even offensive affectation, preferring to eat with their hands or knives. It took centuries for them to become widely accepted.

Before modern medicine, fears of being buried alive were common, so families would watch the body for signs of life. This vigil also served to mourn and prevent grave robbers, evolving into the social custom we know today.
