Extremes

Located on Isla Navarino, Puerto Williams surpassed Ushuaia, Argentina, in 2019 after its population grew sufficiently to be reclassified from a town to a city. It serves as a gateway for expeditions to Cape Horn and Antarctica.

The Southern Patagonian Ice Field and Northern Patagonian Ice Field are vast remnants of the last ice age, feeding numerous glaciers and supplying freshwater. These immense ice masses are crucial for regional ecosystems and global climate studies.

Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Chile is one of the most seismically active countries globally, with around 500 potentially active volcanoes. Villarrica is among the most active, regularly spewing ash and lava and attracting adventurous hikers.

Stretching over 4,300 kilometers (2,670 miles), Chile's narrow shape means no point is more than 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the Pacific Ocean. This extreme length encompasses diverse climates, from arid deserts to alpine tundras.

The Mariana Trench, nearly 11,000 meters deep, experiences pressures over 1,000 times that at sea level. This crushing force is roughly equal to stacking 50 jumbo jets on top of a person, yet life still thrives there, adapted to extreme conditions.
