Starting around the 10th century, young girls' feet were tightly bound to prevent growth, resulting in tiny, 'lotus' feet. This practice, seen as a mark of beauty and social status, caused lifelong disability and was finally outlawed in the early 20th century.

This dangerous practice led to chronic lead poisoning, causing symptoms like skin damage, infertility, and even madness. Despite the health risks, the desire for a pale complexion persisted for centuries.
