Easter Island Belongs to Chile Despite Being 3,700 km Away
Easter Island (Rapa Nui), famous for its nearly 1,000 mysterious moai statues, is a Chilean territory located about 3,700 km off the Pacific coast. The island was annexed by Chile in 1888. The moai were carved by the Rapa Nui people between the 13th and 16th centuries. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and receives about 100,000 tourists annually.
